Kat Loves….The Age of Miracles

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson WalkerThe Age of Miracles. Where do I begin? At this point you have undoubtedly heard about this book from us. But we think it is such a phenomenal, interesting, thought-provoking, well-written title that it deserves a Book of the Week shout-out. Karen Thompson Walker tells the story from such a unique perspective and addresses such a unique occurrence that I cannot say enough good things about it.

The basis of this fictional story is that one day the earth’s rotation slows and soon days and nights become noticeably longer and longer. This poses some extraordinary environmental changes to the earth and to everyday living. To name a few: as the days get longer, it becomes necessary to sleep in daylight and to go to school and work in darkness; crops need artificial light to survive the increasingly long nights which creates a strain on the electrical systems and results in limited and controlled energy use for everyone; nature feels the strain as birds fall from the sky due to increased gravity and whales beach themselves by the hundreds.

The story is told through the eyes of 14-year-old Julia, who lends an innocent yet mature narrative. She is able to watch, and comment on, adult behaviours and the increasing government control in a non-judgmental yet obviously opinionated voice. The especially touching part of the story is that Julia continues her adolescent development; she experiences her first love and rebels in her own small ways. There is something to be said about the enduring humanity of the characters, in the face of looming catastrophe.

Not only did I absolutely love this story to pieces, but everyone I have recommended it too has had only amazing things to say. Together with Karen’s Canadian publicist, Scott, I worked on a video trailer for The Age of Miracles. It gave me another perspective and opportunity to look at this book and to combine specific visual elements in order to represent Karen Thompson Walker’s beautiful writing.

Additionally, Karen came into the office in March and everyone who met her had nothing but extraordinarily nice things to say. I believe that there is nothing better than loving a book and finding out that the author is even more kind and appreciative than you could have ever imagined. Karen was so lovely that she signed a copy of her book for my mom’s birthday, which meant so much to my mom, who having read The Age of Miracles quickly added it to her list of all-time favourite books. Karen also came to visit us a few weeks ago for a blogger lunch where she was so gracious and absolutely fascinating to listen to.

I cannot say enough good things about this book and the author. It is an absolutely enticing must-read!

Karen has posted several covers of her international editions on her Facebook page. For your viewing pleasure, I have posted a couple below. Let us know what you think of the covers in the comments section. And ‘Like’ Karen’s Facebook page to see more covers and get regular book updates.
